Choosing the right RotorFlow® Sensor for your application

Blog-Choosing-the-right-rotorflow-sensor

To start, let’s first define a flow sensor: a flow sensor is a device used to totalize or monitor the rate at which media is flowing through a given space, e.g. ducting, piping. RotorFlow Sensors

Gems Sensors developed the RotorFlow® Sensor to provide visual indication, continuous sensing and accurate switching. The paddlewheel design combines high visibility rotors with solid-state electronics that are packaged into compact, panel mounting housings. They provide accurate flow rate output with integral visual confirmation.

There are three distinct configurations of the RotorFlow® Sensor, so understanding what functionality you will need for your application will help you choose the appropriate version. In general, the RotorFlow® Sensor has the following features:

• Bright, visual indication with choice of pulsed DC output, or adjustable 1 amp switched output
• Flow ranges from .1 GPM to 60.0 GPM
• Compact inline housings
• Availability in high performance plastic, brass, or stainless steel housings

But how do you know which type of RotorFlow® Sensor is right for your application?

Knowing the answer to the following questions will direct you to the appropriate sensor configuration.

• Is specific flow setpoint switching important?
• Are you looking to monitor and/or meter flow rate?
• Do you simply want visual confirmation of flow?

The three different versions of the RotorFlow® Sensor are: Switch type, Output type and Indicator type.

Switch type  RotorFlow® RFS is for specific flow setpoint switching. This flow switch builds an extra level of reliability and protection into your equipment. By principle of operation, the rotor cannot be deceived into indicating a positive flow situation when no flow actually exists. Once set to a desired actuation point, RotorFlow® will switch to a “no-flow” condition should the rotor stop for any reason. Setpoints are fully adjustable over the specified flow range, and the dynamic operation of the rotor guards against jamming and false actuation.

RFS types help to protect expensive electronic equipment from coolant flow failure.
Typical Applications include: Semiconductor processing equipment, lasers, medical equipment, x-ray and other high power tubes, robotic welding equipment.

Output type  RotorFlow® RFO flow sensors provide accurate flow rate output with integral visual confirmation. They provide a pulsed DC voltage output that is proportional to the rate of flow.  The operating range of 4.5 to 24 VDC pulsed output is easily integrated into most digital logic units.  Additionally, the RFA Type RotorFlow® sensors provide a continuous 0-10 VDC analog output.

Typical applications include: water purification/dispensing systems, chemical metering equipment, lasers and welders, water injection systems, semiconductor processing equipment, chillers and heat exchangers.

Indicator type  The RotorFlow® RFI sensor is meant for those who want simple visual confirmation of flow. RotorFlow® RFI flow indicators are a direct, durable and low-cost answer.  A bright orange spinning rotor provides visual flow confirmation at a glance. Flow rate is estimated, or simply confirmed, by viewing the speed of the turning rotor. Either port may be used for incoming flow, and the bayonet mounting lens is easily removed for quick cleanout.

Typical Applications include: Visual flow confirmation on heat exchangers and plastic injection molding equipment.
